Remember this guy? Or what he contributed to the fitness world? I'll help you out...the picture above is none other than Tony Little gallantly gliding along on 'The Gazelle'. Remember now? You can just see that air swishing through his curly, long locks as he strides his way to a fit figure.

 

Or, how about this...

Some Suzanne Somers Thigh Master action. Look how happy she is showing off her trim thighs in her leotard(s)?, hoisting her Thigh Master over her head like it's the Stanley Cup.

 

Other than being "fitness" products, what do they have to do with Pilates? Nothing really, but I was reading an article about fitness trends and fads the other day, and apparently Pilates falls into that category. MY thoughts on this categorization can be summed up in a simple quote by Stephanie Tanner, "How RUDE!".

 

When was the last Gazelle or Thigh Master class that you took at your local gym? Maybe they are kept in some super-secret VIP room and that is why I'm out of the loop. I'm okay with being out of that loop.

 

MY point is that in no way, shape or form is Pilates a fleeting blip on the health and fitness radar. Pilates is more than just a new trend on the workout scene, it is the result of a detailed and conscious study of the kinetics of the mind and body. It was carefully developed over the course of a lifetime to facilitate the optimal function of the human body.

 

Joseph Pilates said, "I am 50 years ahead of my time", and truer words could not be spoken. The guy created exercises to remedy the wrongdoings of the 'modern lifestyle', which, in the early 19oo's, consisted of poor posture and improper breathing. But here is the catch, all of these exercises help with afflictions caused by current lifestyle patterns. Things like carpal tunnel and arthritis are common results from repeated motions like typing at a computer, texting on a cell phone or playing video games, and wouldn't ya know it, the original exercises that Joseph Pilates developed 80 years ago way before computers or cell phones, are still effective today. I'm pretty sure that is the exact opposite of a trend or fad.

 

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is such a thing as 'bad' exercise, whether it be an well-developed and established practice, or the latest gadget/diet/exercise program. Everything has its place, but let me know how the Thigh Master strengthened your whole body while helping your scoliosis, that Cross-Fit helped you recover from a hip replacement or how your fit-bit corrected your form.

 

 

I will leave you with the words of Susan Powter, "Stop the insanity!". Pilates is here to stay, dammit!
