April = 4-Count Frog

Although the winter holiday season is probably the last thing on your mind as we transition into the anticipated summer weather, we continue on our journey through the 12 Days of Fitness. Let's reflect on day 4, the 4-Count Frog:

Personally, I am a big fan of all things "Frog" when it comes to Pilates exercises. That's right, there are multiple exercises on multiple apparatus that refer to that little prince of an amphibian. In the picture above you can see Joe Pilates himself doing the 4-Count Frog on the cadillac.

The basic rundown on the 4-Count Frog is as follows: it is part of the leg spring series that can be performed on the cadillac, tower or guillotine. Along with connecting to the powerhouse, it works to develop strength, stability and flexibility through the hips.

As I am sure you have guessed, the exercise consists of 4 separate motions, what we call the counts, and in moving through these motions you mimic the movement of frog legs, hence the name 4 -count frog. Because the trunk of the body is to remain still and stabilized, the hip joint is able to enjoy dynamic motion in multiple directions, it 'greases the wheels". It is also a prime example of the strength/stretch principle where it helps to develop the mind/body connection that creates the isolation and control of muscles through movements.

That, my friends, is a little snippet about the 4-count frog.
